RICHARD B. THOMPSON, M.D.
to the communities we serve in the practice of
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
exclusively at Lancaster General Hospital

Dr. Thompson was born and raised in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. In 1995 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Basis of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently enrolled at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons achieving his M.D. in 1999. Dr. Thompson then began his surgical training at Duke University Medical Center completing a surgical internship in 2000 and his general surgery residency in 2006. He entered his final years of training at the University of Virginia, finishing a Cardiothoracic Surgical Fellowship in June 2008.

Dr. Thompson is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is board eligible in Thoracic Surgery. His training at major academic centers has provided him with extensive experience in the full spectrum of cardiac, thoracic and major vascular surgery. We are pleased that he has joined our practice in Lancaster, where our longstanding determination to offer the highest quality of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery will be further strengthened by his broad range of skills. We welcome Dr. Thompson as well as his wife, Jennifer, and their two young children, Dylan and Natalie, to our community.

Open Heart at Lancaster General:   Still beating strong after 25 years
On September 7, 1983, Gary Ghee made history, becoming Lancaster General's first open heart surgey patient. Nearly a quarter century later, both Gary and the hospital's open heart surgery program are still going strong.

Day of Dance 2007
Dr. Mark Burlingame and Dr. Jeffrey Cope with help from Tim Zellers, Vice President, Cardiology, LGH greeted over 1,000 women at the 2007 Day of Dance for Cardiovascular Health. The day was filled with educational fun for all in attendance.
